The RSPB is holding a series of dawn chorus walks around the beautiful woodlands every Sunday of the month at 5 am.
Blackcaps to blackbirds, woodpeckers to warblers – the three-hour stroll will be entertained by the heady melodies of scores of the UK’s finest songsters.
Here are just a few:
Drummer – the great spotted woodpecker beats out a powerful rhythm using its beak against dead wood
Lead singer – forget Robbie Williams or Frank Sinatra, the blackbird is the crooner of the woods, wooing the ladies with a melodious medley of music
Backing group – the warblers [blackcaps, willow warblers and chiffchaffs] send your senses spiralling with their heady mix of harmonies
Groupie – the wren bustles about often unable to resist bursting into a frenzy of noise during the performance
The walks are being held to mark International Dawn Chorus Day on 3 May, a celebration of birdsong around the world.
Chris Andrews, RSPB visitor officer, said: "The dawn chorus is one of nature’s true delights. This is a great chance to experience birdsong at its best in a glorious natural setting."
The dawn chorus stroll costs £3 per adult and £1 per child. Places are limited so advance booking is recommended.
The Top Lodge centre is located in the Forestry Commission’s Fineshade Woods, just off the A43 between Corby and Stamford (signposted Top Lodge, Fineshade). Parking is free for RSPB members (otherwise £2) and there is a café, toilets and children’s play area on site.
